Amalia Koutra, is a graduate of the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at the School of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), with Professor Dimitris Zouroudis. I was born and raised in the city of Preveza, where I graduated from the Department of Accounting and Finance at the University of Ioannina.
I come from an immigrant family, who arrived in Greece in the late 1990s from Gjirokaster, Albania, following the fall of the Communist regime in the country. I grew up simultaneously between two countries and two languages, and many of my memories are closely connected with identity as a multidimensional concept evolving through personal experiences.
From a young age, I faced the paradox of feeling like a “foreigner” in the country where I was born, but also “foreign” from the country of my origin. This dual identity created both a challenge and an opportunity for me to better understand how the experiences, information, and knowledge we store in our memories can construct a personal narrative. My own narrative includes personal relationships, family moments, racist attacks, school violence, bullying, but also significant losses.
