Velliou Katerina

Sort Biography

Katerina Velliou is a visual artist. She studied Fine and Applied Arts at the School of Fine Arts, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and completed postgraduate studies in Architectural Design at the University of Thessaly.
Her artistic practice develops through an ongoing research process exploring time, place and matter. Working across painting, direct surface impressions and spatial installations, she investigates the surface as a field of inscriptions and transformations, where matter becomes a carrier of experience and time. Drawing from architecture, landscape and place, her work approaches these as lived conditions rather than subjects of representation.
She has presented her work in solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad and has participated in artist residencies and research-based projects, including Fondazione Orestiadi (Italy) and Zygote Press (USA). In 2026 she presented the installation What Remains Sacred? as part of the exhibition Modern ARTεμις at the City of Athens Arts Center.
She is the originator of the concept and Artistic Director of the interdisciplinary project Timeless Textures | From Tradition to Contemporary Creation, overseeing its overall artistic development while also participating as an exhibiting artist. Since 2017, she has been teaching Visual Arts in public education. She lives and works in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Inscriptions

The works in this series originate from a period of artistic research focused on the surface as a bearer of inscriptions. Some derive from direct impressions of weathered walls, while others emerge through a painterly investigation of the same condition. Together, they represent different expressions of the same inquiry. The surface is approached as a site where time and place become inscribed. Transferred from their original context into the space of art, these traces are released from their initial condition and acquire a new presence. Decay is understood not as loss, but as a dynamic process of transformation through which matter preserves and reveals its successive changes.
This body of work forms part of a broader artistic research into the ways in which time and place become inscribed in matter.
